Teeth whitening is very popular these days. Just about every tube of toothpaste on the shelf seems to tout its ability to whiten your teeth, as well as clean them and guard them from decay. That’s no surprise, since there are a lot of things in our contemporary diet that can stain our porous teeth. One big offender is coffee. We drink a lot of it in the United States. About 64% of Americans drink coffee daily, and the average American spends more than a thousand dollars on coffee each year. But coffee isn’t alone in the tooth-staining department. Other culprits include: dark teas. Sodas & sports drinks, red wine, blueberries, beets, tomato sauce, soy sauce and dark balsamic vinegar.
The good news is that whitening methods have come a long way over the years. Contemporary technology whitens without risk to the structure of teeth.
On one level, whitening is whitening. The same essential materials are used whether you go to your dentist or buy some sort of off-the-shelf whitening kit. The difference with professional whitening is the strength of the whitening material and the method used in applying it to the teeth. Off the shelf whiteners tend to have much less potent formulas and provide less than optimal coverage. We see a lot of patients coming in for whitening after unsatisfying experiences with a store-bought whitening product.
