Dental Implants in Annapolis MD

“Dental Implant” can be a confusing term, because the word talks about only one step in a two-step process. The implant process is essentially the process of building a tooth, root and all. But let’s step back a moment for a look at the need for an implant.

When a tooth is lost, the support it gives to neighboring teeth is lost along with it; that can lead to shifting that adds an unattractive row of crooked teeth beside the space left by the lost tooth. In the past, dental bridges were the treatment of choice for filing that gap and shoring up neighboring teeth. But with bridges, those neighboring teeth needed to be shaved down or roughened in order to accommodate a bridge. When implants came along, they provided a much more targeted solution that didn’t compromise healthy teeth.

  • Implant vs. Fixed Bridges and Removable Dentures

When compared to fixed bridges and removable dentures supported by other teeth or gum tissue, implants offer numerous advantages:

Implants look better. An implant doesn’t just fill a gap, it replaces the entire structure of a tooth so that the cap at the top of the titanium rod sits as close to naturally as possible.

They reduce bone resorption. When bone isn’t needed, it tends to go away through a process called “resorption” during which the minerals that make up the bone and reabsorbed into the bloodstream. An implant, to over-simplify things a little, basically gives the bone in your jaw something to do.

They can help with dentures. People who wear dentures are very familiar with the problem of keeping them in place. If you’re looking into getting dentures, ask Dr. Daniel about using implants to anchor your dentures. In some case, a series of implants with stabilizing screws can be used to secure the denture completely.

As we mentioned above, the implant process is a two-step procedure for replacing a missing tooth. Actually, it’s a three-step procedure. First, we need to make sure you’re qualified for implants, if you have sufficient bone mass in your jaw to support an implant. Usually, we do an x-ray and CT-scan to both check your bone mass and determine the size and type of implant you need. If you don’t have the required bone mass, we will look into doing a bone graft that, after a period of time, will generate fresh bone that is capable of supporting an implant.

Once you’ve qualified for an implant, the process begins with a titanium rod that is threaded like a screw at one end. The gum is opened up to reveal the jaw bone, and then the implant is inserted through the gum and literally screwed into the jaw. We will also measure for the artificial tooth that will later be attached to the titanium rod. After that part of the process, we’ll send you home for a while to heal up.
When the implant area has healed, firmly setting the implant, the root of the tooth we’re building is ready to go. At that point, you’ll come back to our office to have your artificial tooth or “cap” put into place.
